Sailing Captain's Log

A quick trip from Calypso Bay Marina, around the corner to Tipplers Cafe. We even managed to get the sails up!

Our journey!

We left Calypso Bay just after low tide on Saturday morning. 8-12kts easterly, clear skies. It took me three times longer than it should have to check the boat, but can never be too certain… With a crew of three, plus myself, we carefully left the marina and headed off through the narrow sea ways.

Tipplers Cafe is a little pub / cafe / meeting place for boaties on the western side South Stradbroke Island. It’s a unique gathering spot for boating enthusiasts, whose vibrant atmosphere is as refreshing as the cold beers it serves. It boasts an impressive lunch menu that caters to a variety of tastes, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. Given its popularity, it can get quite busy, but patience pays off as patrons are treated to the fascinating sight of bustling boat traffic passing by. It’s a laid-back establishment, where I’ve found it’s basically customary to not wear shoes!

Jetskis and tenders line the shore of the busy, yet stunning, Tipplers Cafe

We fired up the little 2.5HP tender, but found ourselves rowing not long later! I think this little one needs a service before we try again…

Tendering
The tender worked … for a short while!

The locals not too impressed by our shinanigans

Heading back in we had perfect wind to test sails wing on wing. The boom of the main near 90 degrees out to the port side, the genoa off to starboard. Looking back I should have used the whisker pole for the genoa, but, I can add that extra variable in another day… with not much room to move in the pretty narrow sea ways we ended up with about 5kts under sail - we were pretty happy with this!

Sailing ‘wing on wing’ / ‘goose wing’ (should have used the whisker pole)

Mum at the helm - both sails up!

All in all a great quick spin down the road…
